The Kechwas in Chunchiwi San Roque, located in the Peruvian Amazon, are part of a resilient Indigenous community preserving their language, traditions, and deep connection to the land. The Kechwas of this area continue to uphold their cultural identity despite external pressures. Their community is a living example of resistance and continuity, where ancestral wisdom is passed down through generations
San Roque de Cumbaza is a 45min drive in moto-taxi from a Tarapoto.
If you would like to walk it’s about 2- hours in total.
- 15-min Moto Taxi to Petrona’s Home: Enjoy a scenic ride to Petrona’s home.
- Activity: Create a simple ceramic bowl, learning traditional techniques.
- 15-min moto ride to Chunchiwi: Ride to Chunchiwi to meet the Chunchiwi Women’s Association. Opportunity to buy souvenirs: bags, key rings, purses etc all made with kichwa weaving and together with modern designs.
Afternoon:
- Travel back to San Roque de Cumbaza: we can walk or take the moto-taxi.
- Lunch: Savor a traditional meal featuring local ingredients.
- River Swim: Relax and cool off with a swim in the nearby river.
- Return to Tarapoto: After a fulfilling day of culture, creativity, and connection, head back to Tarapoto via moto taxi.
