San Roque de Cumbaza and its Agricultural Landscape
San Roque de Cumbaza is a small Amazonian town (~830 m elevation), about 45 minutes from Tarapoto. It borders the Cordillera Escalera Conservation Area.
Farmers cultivate cacao, coffee, Jergon Sacha, Honey, Sacha Inchi, Yucca, Sachapapa, papaya, corn, pumpkin, lettuce, coriander, beans, peanuts, bananas and tropical fruits via small chacras.
Organic Cacao Farming
Farmers in the region often cultivate cacao through agroforestry systems—intercropping it with fruit trees, maintaining shade cover, and minimizing chemical inputs. This sustainable approach helps preserve biodiversity and supports soil health. Local women transform the raw cacao into energetic chocolate using traditional methods. Visitors can also purchase ceremonial-grade cacao, often used in spiritual and wellness practices.
Organic Coffee and Agroforestry Systems
San Martín ranks among Peru’s top regions for coffee production, with mostly smallholder and cooperative farms cultivating Arabica varieties (such as Typica, Caturra) under shade in agroforestry.
