Agriculture and Permaculture in the Upper Amazon
In San Roque de Cumbaza, traditional agriculture is woven into daily life — families cultivate small plots using ancestral methods passed down through generations. These chacras (forest gardens) are rich with native crops like yuca, cacao, bananas, and medicinal plants, grown in harmony with the rhythms of the land.
Further downriver in Chazuta, the Río Bosque Mágico project deepens this relationship through permaculture — combining Indigenous wisdom with regenerative design to restore soil, protect biodiversity, and build resilient, food-producing ecosystems.
Together, these landscapes offer a living example of how agriculture, ecology, and culture can work in balance — nourishing both people and planet. At Roots of the Amazon, you’ll explore these places through hands-on experiences guided by farmers, healers, and stewards of the land.
