1-4 Day Hiking Experiences

Hike to primary rainforest Napo and visit a secret Kechwa community. Hidden waterfalls out of this world.

The village of San Roque de Cumbaza offers a variety of ecolodges and cabins for travelers. For those seeking something more grounded and connected to nature, we provide accommodation at Selva Sentiente—a rustic, roots-style ecolodge immersed in the forest.

Your hiking journey begins with a challenging full-day trek to Curiyacu in the Napo conservation zone. We recommend arriving a day early to relax, settle in, and connect with the river and forest before the adventure begins. After the hike, give yourself another day to rest, swim in the Cumbaza River, and enjoy one of the many family-owned restaurants in town.

On the final day, we travel by car to a secret Kechwa community tucked away in the mountains. From there, we hike through the village to reach a pristine waterfall hidden in the forest. On our return journey to San Roque, we walk down through the valley, passing through native communities and taking in the surrounding beauty and culture.

Hike to a 100m waterfall spectacular views of the Cordillera Escalera + Walk to a Kechwa community and learn ancient craft

We begin our adventure with a challenging hike, so it’s best to spend the night in San Roque de Cumbaza beforehand to rest and prepare. In the morning, we take a short drive to Vista Alegre, where we set off on a 3-hour trek to the powerful Toroyacu Waterfall, nestled deep in the forest.

From there, we continue hiking to Arum Rumi, a small sacred rock site, then ascend to sweeping mountain views of the Cordillera Escalera before descending back into the village of San Roque.

The second day is a time to relax—swim in the Cumbaza River, enjoy the laid-back pace of the village, and visit one of its local restaurants.

On the final day, we take a gentle walk to the nearby village of Chunchiwi, where you’ll participate in a hands-on ceramic-making experience, crafting a small bowl using traditional techniques. This immersive activity connects you to the local culture and artistry. We end the day by walking back through the forest to San Roque.

Hike to the Crystal Clear River Añakiwi and river Confluence. Coffee Farm and learn to make chocolate.

We begin with a scenic hike to the Añakiwi River, starting with breathtaking views over the Cordillera Escalera. The trail then winds down into lush forest, where we cross the Añakiwi River several times before reaching its confluence with the Cumbaza River—a place full of hidden pools and small waterfalls perfect for a refreshing dip.

The second day is for rest and renewal in San Roque de Cumbaza. Swim in the tranquil Cumbaza River, stroll through the village, and enjoy its welcoming local restaurants.

visit an organic cacao farm and meet local chocolate makers preserving ancestral techniques.—a peaceful end to your journey. Wrap up your experience with a return to the city of Tarapoto.
